But 400 amps isn't automatically the right answer: it's a tool for a specific class of build, and choosing it when you need a 320 (or vice versa) costs you money or headroom. What does a 400 amp alternator support?

Quick math: 400A × 14.4V ≈ 5,700 watts of continuous electrical capacity. Subtract what your vehicle itself needs (typically 60–100A for the engine, lights, HVAC and accessories), and a 400A unit leaves roughly 4,000–4,800 watts of headroom for amplifiers, winches, or auxiliary systems — without sagging voltage at idle the way a stock 130A unit does the moment a bass note hits.

Who actually needs 400 amps?
